Sbongiseni ‘Mjikijelwa’ Ngubane (also known as Ichalaha lika Shafuza) is a maskandi performing artist, a singer, songwriter and 12-string guitarist. He was born on the 17 September 1983 in Kwa-Maphumulo, about 100km north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. He had a normal upbringing like any other boys growing rural KZN, such as cattle-herding, stick fighting and most importantly, music and dance from an early age. His passion for maskandi music began while he was still in his village and he vividly remembers how he so wanted to also be maskandi musician like all the other top musicians that he grew up listening to such as the late Mfaz’omnyama and others. When he was a grade 11 learner in 2001, he attended a Maskandi music Festival at Jabulani Amphitheatre, Soweto. He saw one of his idols perform and he was amazed and saw an opportunity to introduce himself to the late Maskandi hitmaker, Mgqumeni. There was an instant connection between the two artists and soon Mjikijelwa started working with his idol. 2001 marked the beginning of Mjikijelwa’s music career as a dancer and composer under the mentorship of the late Khulekani Kwakhe ‘Mgqumeni’ Khumalo who was also known as Igcokama. He composed several songs for Mgqumeni’s albums, including ‘Ithwasa Lami’, which showcased his flourishing talent.

In 2009 Mjikijelwa established himself as a solo artist and released his first album titled “Sihlupheke Sonke” shortly before his mentor, Mgqumeni passed away. He also composes and produces albums for four different groups on an annual basis: Umjik’jelwa, Amangcukumane, Omenzelwa and Ichalaha likaShafuza. He currently leads all four groups, who are produced by his own company, Mjikijelwa Music Production. Since 2009, Mjikijelwa has produced 18 Albums and two DVDs, with the majority of songs composed by himself and the rest by members of his bands. Mjikijelwa has also produced other artists under his label, including Piwa Manqele, Nhlanhla Mseleku, Amafikalishona, Indodakazi YeNtandane and Mpilo Mkhwanazi.

Mjikijelwa’s music has received positive reviews from the Maskandi industry and from his fans. His song titled ’20 Years Ago’ won the Best Popular Song at The South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) in 2012. In 2015 he won the Song of the Year at AMANTSHONTSHO KA MASKANDI AWARDS. Again in 2015, his song titled: “Ngiyaqhosha Ngiyaqholosha” became number 4 at the SABC Summer Song of the Year. Every year Mjikijelwa gets nominated for the SATMAs and other Maskandi competitions.

Mjikijelwa has been nominated for various traditional music awards, including the SATMAs and AmaNtshontsho Awards. He has also performed at numerous prestigious traditional music festivals and events across South Africa and even overseas in South America, Amsterdam in Holland and many other parts of the world.

Mjikijelwa travelled to Holland with a group  called Ondabuzekwayo, which consists of himself, Ali Mgube of amaSAP and Mthandeni Manqele (Igcokama Elisha). They performed at the Kwaku Festival at The Hague in Amsterdam which is a festival that attracts millions of people annually. The festival goes on for over four weekends and it offers visitors a selection of food, art, live music and dance. The festival’s origins lie in celebrating the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles on 1 July 1863. The Dutch responded positively to the music of Ondabuzekwayo which got them yet another overseas gig to go perform in South America.

One of Ondabuzekwayo’s biggest fans is South African President Jacob Zuma’s nephew and businessman, Khulubuse Zuma who is said to have ‘blessed’ them a lot over the past couple of years. He has supported the group greatly for their impeccable talent.

Mjikijelwa is also admired by his fans for his reported six cars. He was seen arriving in a Maserati in one of the festivals he performed at. He has also been seen in a red VW GTI, a white VW GTI, a Range Rover, and many other cars.
