Saba Mbixane of Lavuth’ibhayi + Siwel’uThukela (in the middle) with Ngizwe Mchunu & Tshathugodo Ngobe (Utalagu) of Sigiya Ngengoma

Saba Mbixane of Umhlobo Wenene FM surprised many people (especially uKhozi FM listeners) on Saturday when he won two highly coveted awards for the second time in a row at the 7th Annual SATMA Awards in East London, beating more than 10 other nominees.

Most people expected uKhozi FM’s Utalagu (two popular traditional music Djs – Tshathugodo Ngobe and Ngizwe Mchunu) to win the Best Traditional Dj award because of the high listenership of their station. Their show, Sigiya Ngengoma, was also expected to win the Best Traditional music radio program award. However, Mbixane took both awards.

Tornado Ntenteni of Amawele kaMamTshawe won the Best Newcomer award.

UKhozi FM’s listenership soared significantly  this year, reaching a staggering 7.3 million. Umhlobo Wenene FM on the other hand has a listenership of about 5 million, according to their website.

Detailed results will be published later on.
